When you go to turn on your water, you expect water to come out. At the same time, you also expect that same water to drain out of your sink. If, however, you feel like your drains aren't draining properly, then you may have a clog. If you have never dealt with a clog before, this article is just the thing for you.
Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
Baking soda and vinegar can each be used to help with separate cleaning problems, but when they are combined, they can help to unclog drains. To start out, gently shake some baking soda into your drain. Then, pour some vinegar in the drain. As soon as you do this, you should see some bubbling come up; this means that it's doing its job.
Undo the P-Trap
If you look underneath your sink, you will see several of your pipes fitting together. Take a look a the pipe that looks like a "U." Things can get stuck at the bottom of the "U," which can make it hard for water to run through it, resulting in a clog. To help get things out of your p-trap, unscrew the joints that screw it together and place a bucket underneath it. As you unscrew it, water, hair, and even soap scum may come out of it. Once the entire thing is off, then you can clean it out; this should really help you get rid of your clog. If, however, it doesn't, then it's definitely time to schedule an appointment with a plumber.
Call a Plumber
If you aren't sure what you should do with your clogged drain or if you haven't had any success with the things listed above, then it's time to call a plumber. Your plumber will be able to come out to your house and will usually use a device called a snake to get rid of the clog. A snake is a long, thin metal hose that is designed to break up clogs and clear out the drain.
Rather than just putting up with a clogged drain, make sure that you get it taken care of before it gets worse. To learn a little bit more about what you can do if you have a clogged drain, make sure that you contact a plumber near you, and they will come out to your house and give you a bid and offer tips to help you avoid the problem in the future.
